How I Started YardsticksRule
Growing up, we always had a yardstick or two leaning against a closet wall, unused and unloved. Over the years, I've been reminded of my youthful attraction to yardsticks, I suppose because they combine my love of woodworking and the need to measure my work. I've always had a few idle yardsticks in the workshop, so given my leanings, I suppose this hobby was inevitable. And I love colors in vintage yardsticks that just aren't made anymore.
Several years ago, I was repairing an old wooden box, and I happened to have a few scrap pieces of colored yardstick on the bench. It occurred to me that it might be fun to combine the two, and the rest is history. Today, I make a wide range of items with yardsticks of all shapes, content and colors, including boxes, picture frames, tables, and other quirky combinations. It's great fun mixing the art of woodworking with my passion for collecting. And it gives my wife hope that one day I will actually run out of yardsticks.
